Under 14 Camogs win the Championship final
The U14 camogs met Limavady in the County C Final in Newbridge on Sunday, 27th September. Eoghan Rua started well with a Zoe McWilliams flick to Rosanna McAleese, who drove the ball high towards the net, dropping short for Lauren Burns to move it over the line. A well-taken puckout by the Limavady keeper reached their half forward line but Mary-Claire O’Donnell moved it out to Claire Tracey on the wing who dropped it in for Rosanna McAleese to bury in the back of the net. Rosanna followed with 2 well-taken points then a lovely 45’ which dropped into the net.
Limavady were reeling after this, 3:2
down with only 10 minutes on the clock. Captain Rosanna McAleese continued to
lead by example, with another point but again the Limavady keeper was gaining
more distance with her puckouts, the ball caught by their half-forward and
delivered into the small square. Eilis McNamee quickly pulled the ball to the
wing, followed with a confident puck well caught by the hard-working Claire
Tracy, who dropped the ball into the Limavady square for young Kayleigh Colgan
to get her first goal. From the puckout, Claire Tracey scooped up the ball,
passed to Shannon Kennedy, who delivered a high ball in towards the goal. A
Kayleigh Colgan catch on the edge of the square was confidently struck into the
top corner, showing that this young U12 camog is one to look out for in the
future. Caitlin Murray got in on the act with a goal after putting the keeper
under pressure, quickly followed by yet another when Kayleigh Colgan pulled the
ball across goal for Lauren Burns to get the finishing touch for her second
goal.
Half time 7:3 to 0:0, but Limavady were
determined not to give up with a much better performance in the second half,
coming out stronger and using their skilful half forwards to move the ball
goalward. However ER keeper Shannon McWilliams held her nerve at the approach of
much bigger girls, clearing her line out to the wing for Jill McAllister to
safely move it on to Ellen Thompson, a quick kick across for Claire Tracey to
take control and pass in for Kayleigh Colgan to get the first goal of the second
half. Limavady continued to fight back but the Eoghan Rua back line stood
strong stopping every attack, Eilis Mc Namee swiftly moving the ball out of
danger to Saryah McCrossan, on to Abigail Sharpe then with both Claire Tracey
and Rosanna McAleese eager for scores, the Limavady back line lost shape, giving
away a free resulting in a 45’ struck neatly over by the dependable Rosanna
McAleese. After Brega Mullan disposessed the Limavady midfielder, Claire Tracey
was rewarded with a deftly taken point, from the right wing surrounded by
defenders. With time running out, Limavady continued to fight for every ball
with lovely soloing on the right wing stopped by half back Beth Moffatt. Zoe
McWilliams, supporting the runs of Claire Tracey, pulled a lovely ground strike
into the forwards but the ball was put wide. A miss hit puckout saw a quick
response from Olivia McCullough, who played the ball back to Rosanna McAleese
for the final score of the game. A win for Eoghan Rua 10:5 to 0:0 although the
score does not reflect that Limavady worked hard throughout the game.
Under 14 Camogs through to final
A strong Eoghan Rua U14 met Ballerin in the Championship semi-final on Saturday. Ballerin started well, catching Eoghan Rua unawares with a quick attack from the throw in, cleared off the line by Eilis McNamee. They pressed forward immediately and were rewarded with a goal. Eoghan Rua needed this wake-up call and they responded with 2 quick attacks resulting in a goal and a point. A good competitive game followed with Eoghan Rua having to fight for every score with some excellent goal-keeping from the Ballerin Goalie. Half time saw Eoghan Rua up 3:02 to 2:0. In the second half Claire Tracey, Rosanna McAleese and Eilis McNamee showed why they have just been selected to play with Derry U14s with some lovely soloing and hand passing, putting a lot of ball into the Eoghan Rua forward line where the Ballerin goalie stood strong and cleared her line on numerous occasions. Young Kayleigh Colgan , growing in confidence as the game progressed, worked tirelessly at midfield. The score of the match was undoubtedly a lovely taken point taken by Abigail Sharpe, caught from a high ball in from Rosanna McAleese. Final score 6:4 to 2:0 sees Eoghan Rua meet Limavady in the final on 27th Sept.
